<p>You can also add a second metal that has a substantially different electronegativity and you&#8217;ll get galvanic corrosion.</p>
<p>Add a current to the galvanic cell, and you&#8217;ll further accelerate corrosion (on one pole only).</p>

<br />Hi Ed:  This sounds like a case of galvanic corrosion, an electrochemical type of corrosion, and is the result of the nuts and bolts being of a different metal to that of the main equipment.  This type of corrosion is particularly rapid in sea water because movement of ions is involved in the process.<br />
