It was a cheap one (maybe $5 new), but I don’t want to throw it out if I don’t need to. I spent two hours applying and removing naval jelly to/from it about six months ago, however, and would rather gouge my eyes out with a fork (or, less ridiculously, throw it out) than repeat that exercise. Ideas?
Honest to Pete. I swear. But 3 out of 3 practically shouted, hand-waving, forehead-slapping answers can’t be wrong. Going out right now to buy a shiny new one. Thanks;)

Honest to pete! But a new one because you DO need to throw it out! Do you want to be eating rust mixed with petroleum jelly?! Ick!

The Battle of Midway was a major naval battle, widely regarded as the most important of the Pacific Campaign of World War II. The battle took place from 4 June to 7 June 1942. Just 1 month after the Coral sea battle and 6 months after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Japan plan was to take Midway and to expand their defensive ring and to expand their Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere. Japan’s idea was to impose another heavy defeat on the US Naval forces and to force a negotiated an end to the Pacific War on conditions favorable for Japan.

Japan’s plan was to lure US carrier forces into an ambush and intended to occupy Midway. So no further attack like the Doolittle Raid could happen. Only the ambush was in reverse. The US had broken the Japanese Naval code (JN25) and had advance warning of the attack. Japan launched their attack against Midway, not knowing 3 US carriers were in place to strike back. These were the USS Enterprise, Hornet and Yorktown. Japan believed that they had either sunk or damaged the Yorktown at Coral Sea and in no way be available to attack them. They knew that the Saratoga was on the West coast of the US for repairs from a torpedo attack by one of their submarines.

At 0430 on June 4th the Japanese fleet sent over 100 fighter and bombers to hit Midway. At the same time PBYs from Mideay and scout planes for the US Task Forces had located parts of the Japanese strike force. Midway sent everything that they had at the Japanese fleet at the same time they sent their attack towards Midway. Midway was hard hit by the attack, but the Japanese failed to knock out the runway. The land based planes failed to make any hits, but kept Admiral Nagumo’s 4 carriers off balance.

As Admiral Nagumo’s planes were returning to his 4 carriers, his own scout planes located the USS Yorktown. His carriers were preparing a 2nd strike against Midway and were not prepared to attack ships. The Japanese carriers began changing to armor piercing bombs and torpedos. His 1st strike force was now returning to his carriers. Some damaged and all running low on fuel. At the same time 3 waves of US carrier torpedo plane began an unescorted attack on his 4 carriers. They basically were slow moving targets for his Zero fighter. Of some 40 torpedo planes – all but 6 were shot down. Not one scored a hit. More importantly, they kept his ships busy, his fighter cap busy and now the fighter cap was low on fuel. They also were off chasing down the last of the torpedo planes.

At this moment SBD bombers from the 3 American carriers and their escorting fighter appeared over Admiral Nagumo’s 4 carriers. They were sitting ducks without fighter cover. They had fueled and armed planes all over their decks. Within minutes of the beginning of the attack by the US bombers, Akagi, Kaga and Soryu were burning, smoking wrecks.

The sole remaining carrier Hiryu managed to escape the 1st attack undamaged. She launced an attack against the USS Yorktown. They actually follow some of Yorktown’s own planes back to their carrier. Yorktown was attack and left what looked like a smoking sinking ship. It was getting late in the day and Japanese scout planes spotted what they believed to be a 2nd US carrier and the Hiryu launched another attack. Only it was the Yorktown. Her crew had put out the earlier fires and repaired the damaged flight deck. She was back in action and making about 20 knots. Picket ships from the Yorktown group picked up the incoming Torpedo planes from Hiryu. Yorktown launched her planes towards Hiryu. Yorktown was hit again this time by 2-3 torpedos and started to sink. Yorktown & DD Hammann were sunk by I-168 on 7 June.

The Hiryu planes returned to their carrier. Her crew was wore out after doing battle all day. They were trying to catch some rest and eat, when air craft from Enterprise and what was left over from the Yorktown attacked the Hiryu. Within minutes she was a burning wreck like her sister ships from early that morning. The battle of Midway was over. Japan had lost 4 fleet carriers, 1 heavy cruiser, almost 300 planes and over 3,000 killed. The large number of highly trained aircrews loss was impossible for Japan to over come. Only Emperor Hirohito was accurately informed of carriers and pilots losses, and he chose not to inform the Army immediately. Army planners then continued for a short time to believe the fleet was healthy and secure. The US had lost the Yorktown and DD Hammann, 97 air craft and 307 killed. It was the first major defeat of the Japanese in WWII.

In early June of 1967, at the onset of the Six Day War, the Pentagon sent the USS Liberty from Spain into international waters off the coast of Gaza to monitor the progress of Israel’s attack on the Arab states. The Liberty was a lightly armed surveillance ship.

Only hours after the Liberty arrived it was spotted by the Israeli military. The IDF sent out reconnaissance planes to identify the ship. They made eight trips over a period of three hours. The Liberty was flying a large US flag and was easily recognizable as an American vessel.

A few hours later more planes came. These were Israeli Mirage III fighters, armed with rockets and machine guns. As off-duty officers sunbathed on the deck, the fighters opened fire on the defenseless ship with rockets and machine guns.

A few minutes later a second wave of planes streaked overhead, French-built Mystere jets, which not only pelted the ship with gunfire but also with napalm bomblets, coating the deck with the flaming jelly. By now, the Liberty was on fire and dozens were wounded and killed, excluding several of the ship’s top officers.

The Liberty’s radio team tried to issue a distress call, but discovered the frequencies had been jammed by the Israeli planes with what one communications specialist called "a buzzsaw sound." Finally, an open channel was found and the Liberty got out a message it was under attack to the USS America, the Sixth Fleet’s large aircraft carrier.

Two F-4s left the carrier to come to the Liberty’s aid. Apparently, the jets were armed only with nuclear weapons. When word reached the Pentagon, Defense Secretary Robert McNamara became irate and ordered the jets to return. "Tell the Sixth Fleet to get those aircraft back immediately," he barked. McNamara’s injunction was reiterated in saltier terms by Admiral David L. McDonald, the chief of Naval Operations: "You get those fucking airplanes back on deck, and you get them back down." The planes turned around. And the attack on the Liberty continued.

After the Israeli fighter jets had emptied their arsenal of rockets, three Israeli attack boats approached the Liberty. Two torpedoes were launched at the crippled ship, one tore a 40-foot wide hole in the hull, flooding the lower compartments, and killing more than a dozen American sailors.

As the Liberty listed in the choppy seas, its deck aflame, crew members dropped life rafts into the water and prepared to scuttle the ship. Given the number of wounded, this was going to be a dangerous operation. But it soon proved impossible, as the Israeli attack boats strafed the rafts with machine gun fire. No body was going to get out alive that way.

After more than two hours of unremitting assault, the Israelis finally halted their attack. One of the torpedo boats approached the Liberty. An officer asked in English over a bullhorn: "Do you need any help?"

The wounded commander of the Liberty, Lt. William McGonagle, instructed the quartermaster to respond emphatically: "Fuck you."

The Israeli boat turned and left.

A Soviet destroyer responded before the US Navy, even though a US submarine, on a covert mission, was apparently in the area and had monitored the attack. The Soviet ship reached the Liberty six hours before the USS Davis. The captain of the Soviet ship offered his aid, but the Liberty’s conning officer refused.

Finally, 16 hours after the attack two US destroyers reached the Liberty. By that time, 34 US sailors were dead and 174 injured, many seriously. As the wounded were being evacuated, an officer with the Office of Naval Intelligence instructed the men not to talk about their ordeal with the press.

Why ask a question you have made your mind up already?

The Israeli attack on the USS Liberty was a grievous error, largely attributable to the fact that it occurred in the midst of the confusion of a full-scale war in 1967. Ten official United States investigations and three official Israeli inquiries have all conclusively established the attack was a tragic mistake.

As in ever story there is two sides the truth lies somewhere out there.

I used Permatex Naval Jelly (part # 81756) on my trucks frame (on the rusty areas).
I left the stuff on there longer than 15 minutes (maybe 2 hours) and than I went back to my garage and rinsed it off with hose water.

When I went looked at the frame today, the areas that I used the Naval Jelly on were a solid white color (see pics below).

I plan on using undercoating on Monday to paint the frame but is it ok to paint over this white residue?

I tried to wash it off today with dish washing soap and a sponge but it would not come off.

Here are pics of the white spots:

Clean it up with a wire wheel on a drill the best you can or the heavier stuff will flake off, clean the bare metal with some lacquer thinner before you spray

This caused the first-ever invocation of the acting president clause of the 25th Amendment. The surgery lasted just under three hours and was successful. Reagan resumed the powers of the presidency later that day. In August of that year, he underwent an operation to remove skin cancer cells from his nose. In October, additional skin cancer cells that were detected on his nose were removed.

Two years later, on January 5, Reagan underwent surgery for an enlarged prostate which caused further worries about his health. No cancerous growths were found, however, and he was not sedated during the operation. In July of that year, aged 76, he underwent a third skin cancer operation on his nose.

Earlier in his presidency, Reagan started wearing a custom, technologically advanced hearing aid, first in his right ear and later in his left as well. His decision to go public with his wearing the small, audio-amplifying device boosted their sales.

The Reagan administration was criticized for its slow response to the growing HIV-AIDS epidemic. As thousands became infected with the virus, President Reagan did not increase funding to try to discover cures, rather he downplayed the situation and only acknowledged that it was an issue of concern at the May 31, 1987 Third International Conference on AIDS in Washington.

During his 1980 campaign, Reagan pledged that, if given the opportunity, he would appoint the first female Supreme Court Justice. That opportunity came in his first year in office when he nominated Sandra Day O’Connor to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Justice Potter Stewart. In his second term, Reagan elevated William Rehnquist to succeed Warren Burger as Chief Justice, and named Antonin Scalia to fill the vacant seat. Reagan nominated conservative jurist Robert Bork to the high court in 1987. Senator Ted Kennedy, a Democrat of Massachusetts, strongly condemned Bork, and great controversy ensued. Bork’s nomination was rejected 58-42. Reagan then nominated Douglas Ginsburg, but Ginsburg withdrew his name from consideration after coming under fire for his cannabis use. Anthony Kennedy was eventually confirmed in his place. Along with his three Supreme Court appointments, Reagan appointed 83 judges to the United States Courts of Appeals, and 290 judges to the United States district courts. His total of 376 appointments is the most by any president.
