How To Remove Rust From A Gun

How to remove light to moderate rust from a gun.

Note:If you have pitting (A condition where the rust starts to eat the metal and cause cavitation in the surface of the metal. When this is done you will have to send it out to a gunsmith to get it professionally done. The best way to prevent pitting is to prevent rust all together. Metal does rust though…so if you can protect the surface by taking out surface rust relatively soon…and protecting the finish with oil (I paint my waterfowling guns) you can avoid this all together.

As always make sure guns are unloaded before working on them and be safe!

@iepa90 Yeah but you will want to go slow. Dont apply pressure just barely let the steel hit the metal or you will strip the finish too.

you can use any oil …
you can use any oil. Motor oil, gun oil, fishing rod oil, it doesnt matter.

You can use gun oil from a gun store. This stuff I use is called barricade.

I have a guy I work …
I have a guy I work with who does it…Hes a smith. Rattle canning it is cheaper but that dura coat is great stuff ! : D

I clean my guns the same way when im dealing with rust. However this may help if your hunting in areas like that. Check out a product named dura coat. Its a ceramic coating makes your gun like totally rust proof and scratch proof.
