How to remedy a rusting refrigerator?

Several months ago I spray painted the outside doors and side of my refrigerator with normal spray paint (white spray paint since the refrigerator was white). It looked great. It covered up all the rust spots that were showing through.

Well, the rust has ‘eaten’ thru the paint and is showing itself again with even more vengeance than before it seems.

Is there anything I can do to seal the rust? I used ‘Naval Jelly" (a rust remover prior but it still comes back) and it didn’t seem like it worked.

Will RUSTOLEUM spray paint keep the rust off? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

most likely the thin sheet steel on the fridge is rusting from the inside and "leaking" rust through tiny pin holes. This kind of rusting is impossible to stop..

I have had some success in slowing it down/hiding it with sanding, priming and repainting with an oil paint (primer and finish coat). But it is work.

In any case if your home decor allows I would suggest painting it black (final coat) Chances are the fridge will die before the rust really begins to bother you again (visually speaking).

Clearly white paint is the worst color for hiding rust.

cheers

  1. Rust removal prior to painting is important either by sanding, or specialized primers or metal treatment. The Navy uses a primer called Molybate primer, and either poly-amide paints, or alkalide paints. Products like Rustoleum do work fairly well, but you’ll want to rough up the existing paint prior to spraying it, and be sure to use a rust inhibiting primer.

  2. The rust is likely coming from inside the wall cavity.

    Your refrigerator is toast.

  3. Rust needs Oxygen and moisture to be made. What you did would have normally cut it off from that but there has to be other places that the rust is getting it’s Energy . You can put on epoxy and that will cover and stick to solid rust.
